Telstra, Optus to start censoring the web next month

MOST Australian internet users will have their web access censored next month after the country’s two largest internet providers agreed to voluntarily block more than 500 websites from view.

As should be crystal clear to almost everyone, government imposed web censorship in Australia has nothing to do with “stopping child pornography.” This can be demonstrated with just two words – “proxy server”. It is pretty funny though I must admit, to see the government still playing dumb, as if it just doesn’t know about the gaping technical flaws in their plan to save the public from themselves – all this despite the intensive debate about this issue in the public arena over the last three years.

I sincerely hope that child pornography disapears from the earth, but if this plan gets through not only will there still be child pornography but we will see more and more legitimate types of sites blacklisted over time. Hell, even a few years ago it was revealed that:

about half of the sites on the list are not related to child porn and include a slew of online poker sites, YouTube links, regular gay and straight porn sites, Wikipedia entries, euthanasia sites, websites of fringe religions such as satanic sites, fetish sites, Christian sites, the website of a tour operator and even a Queensland dentist [/source]

The government view is that it is simply too dangerous to continue to allow the public access to a free internet. Once the law is on the books it has the danger of morphing into something dangerous over time. This is almost certain given that the governments throughout the Western world no longer see themselves as the representatives of organic nations. If modern democracy worked as claimed then what’s the need for the taxpayer funded propaganda brigades and PR goons? Who’s vote counts more toward policy formation, yours or some corporation or think tank?

The other thing to take away from the article linked at the top of this post is that private interests are helping the goverment censor the internet. If your political votes don’t count, you can always vote with your dollars

This is a fantastic piece of news for all the austerity mongers out there! To them, the use of electricity, natural gas and petrol were making Gaia slightly warmer anyway so its great that many working class folk will no longer be able to afford these “luxuries” anymore! In the past, the elected governments of NATIONS may have intervened to protect the productivity and health of the PEOPLE. This is no longer possible to do in a competent manner within the present world situation since special interests now run the show.

Until the present lot gets booted from office, the cry from the Australian government will predictably remain, “Australians are demanding further impoverishment via carbon taxes and emissions trading”. I humbly await the next taxpayer funded PR assault on commonsense and civilization.

South Australia-based NorthWest Carbon has submitted a methodology application to the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency to have camel culls approved as a carbon farming initiative activity.

If approved, accredited marksmen will shoot camels from helicopters or muster the animals to a point where they can be transported to an abattoir for slaughter. Polluters will then be able to purchase carbon credits from the company to offset their emissions…

I understand the need to control wild camel populations, but they must plan on using magical helicopters, you know, the kind that produce no carbon dioxide emissions… either that or this carbon shit has gone too far…

These guys have a spotless track record for establishing “true democracies.” Therefore I choose to believe, without reservation, everything this article says. There is absolutely no intent of foul play here. The money raised will under NO CIRCUMSTANCES be used for wars or to help overthrow countries.

In the article cited above, Schneider indicates that his oft-quoted statement concerns ethical tensions among climate scientists between making scientifically accurate statements and being politically effective in promoting action on climate change. It is not, he alleges, a call to arms for scientists to stretch the truth on climate change as is often claimed. Whatever the case, Schneider’s idea is interesting in itself. Climate scientists who veer more on the activist side of the scale are in an odd situation – to communicate the need for action on climate change to the public, they must inevitably transform their scientific information into pre-packaged scary scenarios that overlook any methodological issues or shortcomings that may limit the validity and generalizability of the actual scientific findings on which they are based. When the scientist crosses the threshold to become an activist, they pass into the PR/propaganda world where the public, being seen as incapable of comprehending rational arguments, is communicated to on an emotional, rather than intellectual level. This is the way of the world. The problem, however, is that during the propagation of this information, the scientist-activist retains their status as a scientist (an objective truth-teller in the eyes of the public) rather than being presented as an activist with a specific political mission. This is very misleading. We have also seen extreme cases of climate-scientists who so fully cross over into the activist frame that they are even willing to alter their scientific findings for the green cause.

Unlike (honest) scientists, politicians are completely unburdened by ethical dilemmas of the type presented by Schneider and may freely and with a clear conscience, sell to the public as many outrageous scenarios as are needed to achieve their political goals. The carbon tax/trading scheme proposed by the Australian government is much more than merely being about the environment – it is a massive undertaking that changes the entire relationship between productive capital, international finance and the state. By changing the stakes of the economic game you create winners and losers… and also a great deal of interested parties and lobbyists from different groups who honestly could not give a fuck about the environment, they just want to win a slightly larger piece of the pie. The enormity of implementing carbon taxation/trading means that it cannot be undertaken lightly, needs a broad (and provable!) approval among the public, should not be swept in under a wave of propaganda, nor designed by those who have proven themselves inept in governing. To be in any way successful in achieving its aims, action on climate change would need to be done simultaneously on a global scale, not on a country by country basis – unless you just want to impoverish yourself for no discernible gain. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that I think that the currently proposed actions on climate change (esp. cap and trade, rather than a flat tax) are nothing more than an extension of economic globalization and will ultimately lead to job cuts, more industries going overseas to countries such as China, the externalization of corporate expenses to the consumer, further financial instability with the productive part of your country’s economy becoming completely subject to the whims of hedge fund operators and other derivates traders, increased costs of living in every aspect of life (including food) and the lessening of national sovereignty – all while doing nothing for the environment.

Get ready for the scary scenarios folks, there’s a lot at stake here so the lies will be coming in thick and fast…

MPs told to warn of climate mayhem

JULIA Gillard has told Labor MPs to warn voters that a failure to back a carbon tax will lead to more bushfires and droughts as well as coastal inundation and shorter skiing seasons. [Note: Funny that when the drought in Australia was very bad it was claimed that climate change would lead to more droughts. After the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, it was claimed that climate change would lead to more bushfires. After the floods in Queensland and Victoria this year it was claimed that climate change would lead to more floods and wet weather - the opposite of droughts. Now I guess its back claiming that climate change will cause more droughts again...]

MPs have also been instructed to warn constituents that unchecked climate change would lead to people in northern NSW experiencing a climate like that of Cairns, in far north Queensland.

The Prime Minister has given her troops scripted lines they should use with journalists or constituents, which justify the use of public money on government advertising in an apparent bid to soften up the electorate for a coming campaign in favour of the tax.

Why does it seem that at least since the days of Bill Clinton, all the ‘good’, wars are waged by  ‘PEACEkeeping’ forces?… Odd eh? And about those peacekeeping missions, surely there’s no politics behind them, I mean they’re just waging peace selflessly for the good of the world, no???
